Arkansas Ladybacks

The Lady'Backs, or Lady Razorbacks, refers to any of the women's sports teams that competes officially for the University of Arkansas Razorbacks. The term Lady'Backs evolved over time as newspaper editors would shorten the mascot name. It was adopted by the Women's Athletics Department for secondary usage in 1991. Notice that it is a contraction - always with the apostrophe between the two parts and a capital "B". While many university sports teams have dropped the "Lady" portion of their nickname, it remains at the University of Arkansas as a marketing tool to emphasize the separate athletic departments. The Women's Athletics Department was formed at the University of Arkansas in 1971-72. It will merge with the Men's Athletics Department effective Jan. 1, 2008. The current women's athletics director at the University of Arkansas is Bev Lewis. For the 2005-06 academic year, the University sponsors 11 varsity women's teams that compete in NCAA Division I. The Lady'Back "A" logo is the official logo for the Women's Athletics Department, but teams also employ the traditional University Razorback on uniforms.

Several global companies are headquartered in the northwest corner of Arkansas, including Wal-Mart (the world's largest public corporation by revenue in 2007), J.B. Hunt and Tyson Foods. This area of the state has experienced an economic boom since the 1970s as a result.

In recent years, automobile parts manufacturers have opened factories in eastern Arkansas to support auto plants in other states. Additionally, the city of Conway is the site of a school bus factory.

Tourism is also very important to the Arkansas economy; the official state nickname "The Natural State" was originally created (as "Arkansas Is A Natural") for state tourism advertising in the 1970s, and is still regularly used to this day.

Bud Walton Arena (also known as the Basketball Palace of Mid-America) is the home to the men's and women's basketball teams of the University of Arkansas, known as the Razorbacks (men) and Lady'Backs (women). It is located on the campus of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas and has a seating capacity of 19,200, which is the fifth largest for an on-campus arena in the United States.

The arena has been the home to the Razorbacks and Lady'Backs since November of 1993; the men's team won the national championship in the arena's first season of operation. The previous arena in which both teams played, Barnhill Arena, was renovated into a volleyball-specific facility and now houses the Lady'Backs volleyball team. Bud Walton Arena has more seats in less space than in any other facility of the same type anywhere in the world.

Barnhill Arena is a 10,000-seat multipurpose arena in Fayetteville, Arkansas, now used primarily for volleyball. The arena opened in 1954 and was home to the University of Arkansas Razorbacks (men's) and Ladybacks (women's) basketball teams before they moved to Bud Walton Arena in 1993. Prior to that, the arena had been considered to be one of the toughest to play in, first in the Southwestern Conference and then in the Southeastern Conference, especially when Nolan Richardson was coach, it earned the nickname "Barnhell Arena" because of its' ravenous student section. After the opening of the new arena, the university converted Barnhill Arena into a volleyball and gymnastics-specific facility, and the Ladybacks' volleyball and gymnastics teams have played there ever since. The arena is also occasionally used for special events, such as concerts, graduations, and speakers.
